Linux - Slackware Installation Tips
Author: Lee Savage

Below is a tip that would have saved me about an hour trying to installing Slackware 12.0 on one of my fast machines that had an Intel motherboard with a PATA interface for the CDROM. You might ask why I even bothered creating this article if there is one tip in it. I'll add more trips as I encounter them later...

Tip #1 - Install Slackware from Mounted Directory
If your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive cannot be detected and instead you figured out a way to make a copy of the Slackware install distribution on your hard drive, you will first need to mount that drive partition in a location other than /mnt (as recommended by the installer help) such as /extra for example. Then when setup prompts you for a source, you select "Install from a pre-mounted directory". If you are like me, you would simply type in the path to the copied Slackware disk on the drive such as /extra/slack12cd. Then when you get to the part of the installation that copies files, no files will be installed and you'll be told that setup is complete. What setup doesn't tell you is that the full path to the copied file is not good enough. You need to append to your path /slackware, as is done automatically if you are installing from a CD/DVD such as the path shown below:

/extra/slack12cd/slackware

Then you should be able to use that path as a valid source for installation.
